Sticky FAQs
Poland-General
Is it Krakow or Cracow?
In Poland it is spelled with a "K" (i.e. Krakow) [pronounced: krakuf]. In the English speaking world it is often spelled with a "C" (i.e. Cracow). It is unclear (at least to us) how, why, or when the alternate spelling became prevalent - but it is. So the two spellings for the name of this beautiful city are now used pretty much interchangeably and everyone knows that you are talking about the historic Royal Capital of Poland no matter which way you spell its name...
Since the Poles use a "K", we prefer that spelling. However, since we link to other sites/sources, it is hard to strictly enforce this style - so you'll see it spelled both ways even on our site.
If you can shed some more light on how the alternate spelling began, please let us know.
